Kinja'd!!!

I just spent way too much on a pair of glasses. However, for the past few years I have had to pay out of pocket for all of my eyeball needs. This year I oped in for the healthcare savings account at work, and we have excellent coverage out of the gate, so I splurged. I knew the lenses would be expensive as I have astigmatism, so unless I go for the thinnest (most expensive) lenses. I will look like bubbles.

Kinja'd!!!

Sticker shock came when I saw the price on the frames! First time I ever had to haggle on a pair of fucking glasses .

How much (out of pocket) do insured, spectacle laden Oppo’s usually spend on a new pair?

I stopped getting my glasses free three years ago... my glasses are three years old now. I should probably replace them but paying sucks.

Last time I bought glasses I thought I’d give the cheapest Tesco frames a try - £15 including lenses, and they look fine and haven’t broken. I had some fairly expensive frames before that - up to ~£200 - and then my prescription changed every six months or year. Of course, now I have a cheap pair, my prescription hasn’t changed.

same with me, the pair I have I thought initially were good however now they are just too small and I can see the edges of the frame and is bugging me so thinking of changing them but £££

Mine were okay but the nose pieces broke off so they’re super uncomfortable now, been that way for months.

After some pretty decent insurance coverage I spent about $1,000 on a set of Tag Heuers and Carl Zeiss lenses, which was $1,000 too much. Hated the lenses and the Tags didn’t hold up well, plus it seems that no lab could cut the lenses right to fit the frames.

Kinja'd!!!

After the Tag fiasco I opted for some slightly less expensive Mykita Hannibals (which are awesome) and lenses, the manufacturer of which escapes me. The Mykitas are painted stainless and have neato pinless hinges.

My insurance is pretty good and my prescription is pretty severe but I paid 129 for my current pair. That’d be about a years worth of contacts.

I’m primarily a contact lens wearer so I only update my frames/lenses every few years. Last year frames and lenses with no fancy coatings and such, just the thinner plastic lenses was under $400 from my local shop.

The frames are from the Greg Normal collection and my prescription in the -3 to -4 range so regular lenses are off the table.

I have truly Oppo glasses... Porsche Design frame. Although, I have to admit, it’s just the name. They are nothing special quality-wise.

I’m planning to buy a new pair this year, as I feel the need for stronger lenses. A pair with an OK set of frames will set me back around (the equivalent of) 350-400 USD.

A couple of days ago I saw some Jaguar frames in a shop...

Ouch, yea 1k for something you hate is tough to swallow. These would have been a touch over $700 without insurance/HSA. I don’t know who makes the lenses, but they are what I always get (thinnest/lightest available for those with astigmatism) and they have been great. I normally go with RayBan Frames ($1-200), but I tried on a pair of Tom Fords and had to have them.

Both, the Zeiss lenses and the curved frame (and therefore curved lenses) ruined it.

Interesting. I don’t know if I could pick out glasses without trying them on first. Maybe that’s a good thing though, trying a bunch of different frames is what got me out the door with a pair of Tom Fords.

Haha yeah well Zenni’s frames are definitely on the cheaper side and may or may not look right on you in real life, however when I went to a Warby Parker store in New York, there literally wasn’t a single pair that I tried on that didn’t look good. They’re truly fantastic frames. If you think they look good online they should be good in real life. It’s a gamble though.

Ever since that Italian company created an eyeglass frame monopoly, prices have been ridiculous. I usually go cheap, which means I spend around $250 for the frames and lenses which is a little more than double what I paid 8 years ago.

I usually end up spending about $400 (give or take a bit) for frames and the lightest progressive lenses they offer. Most of the cost is in the lenses, as I usually can find frames for under $100.

I just got a pair from Zenni and couldn’t be happier. I’ve been rather annoying telling everyone I know about how much I saved buying from them.

I first went to Walmart and the frames I liked were $97. The lenses were not included in the price! After picking the moderately upgraded lenses the total was going to be $250!!!

Then I went online and looked to see what companies were recommended. Warby Parker has a following, but Zenni was cheaper and had good feedback.

My frames were $19 and I upgraded to thinner lenses (1.59 I think) and super anti-smudge for $48 shipped. I’ve had them for a couple weeks and they are great!

They’ve got frames for as little as $7 and the basic lenses are included! You can’t beat that.

Damn, its been years since I’ve spent less than $100 on frames alone. $48 shipped?!

I might try Zenni or WP for a backup pair. My main concern is the lens quality and thickness. I tried the cheap lenses from my eye doctor, they worked but they were sooo thick. I have yet to find thin lenses for my prescription for less than $250.

Do you wear bifocals or some sort of multi-vision lens? That will drive up the price. The thickness is determined by the refractive index. I went with the 1.59 index lenses and they are nice and thin. There are some other options though. Here’s a screenshot from zennioptical.com.

Kinja'd!!!

Here’s a crappy pic of my glasses. The lenses are -3.5 sphere which is pretty strong in my opinion.

Because I wear them literally all the time except when I’m in bed, so I’m willing to pay extra for frames I like and fancy-ass lenses with neato coatings and materials. I usually have a set of frames for a few years, so it’s usually a cost of around $30 a month.

I usually get a new pair of Silhouette frames every spring. After insurance I usually spend about $200. I keep last year’s pair as backups, donate the old-old pair, and keep the train a-movin’.

I spent like $200 total out of pocket for glasses. I have astigmatism in both eyes and the lenses aren’t very thick.. Unless you have a large prescription they shouldn’t be all that thick, even with astigmatism.
